I LOVE DC Yoga because this is where I “found” yoga.  I stumbled upon yoga soon after moving to Washington, D.C. in 1999. I was a recent college graduate putting my political science degree to work in the halls of congress by day & keeping up my love for dance in my off hours. After a few injuries in dance I tried a yoga class & was taken with the marriage of movement and meditation.

It was during the thick of the 2004 political campaign season that I knew I wanted to REALLY teach yoga.My job that campaign season was to dig up the dirt to make negative campaign ads. I would leave the office two hours per week to teach a yoga class at a local DC gym.

I didn’t yet have formal yoga teacher training, but I did have the ability to make me and my students happier, more relaxed, and more authentic in those two hours. As soon as the election losses rolled in that November I signed up for yoga teacher training and I haven’t looked back since.

I always tell new yoga students just to jump in…and then take your time. Root yourself in the basics, learn from your teacher and the students on the mat next to you. Yoga is about feeling good and feeling better so keep checking in to make certain that is happening.  DC Yoga Week 2012 is coming at a great time for me personally as I’ve had a real yearning to reach out and connect more with the greater DC yoga community.  It’s easy to get a bit stuck in your studio and your neighborhood so I feel like a new DC yoga student in a way and am ready to jump back into the bigger picture.

You know we all come to yoga for different reasons.  Yoga has taught me compassion for myself and others. Yoga enlightened a love for Self and has given me the tools for a healthy marriage and to be the best mom to my sweet girl.  I look forward to celebrating all the good stuff yoga has brought to our nation’s capitol during the annual DC Yoga Week.
